The Shy Butterflyfish, also known as the Diamond Butterflyfish (Chaetodon unimaculatus), is a striking species recognized by its diamond-shaped body and bright yellow coloration. It has a prominent black spot near the upper rear of its body, which gives it the nickname "Shy Butterfly." The rest of its body is usually a vibrant yellow with a faded white underbelly, and a black band runs vertically across its eyes, giving it a masked appearance.
Growing up to 8 inches in length, the Shy Butterflyfish is a peaceful species that requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with plenty of swimming space and live rock for hiding. It is a social fish, often found in pairs in the wild, and can coexist with other peaceful fish in a well-established aquarium.
This species is considered reef-safe with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps and small invertebrates, particularly invertebrates like feather dusters or small shrimps. Feeding a varied diet of frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, along with some plant-based foods, will help ensure its health and reduce the likelihood of coral-nipping behavior.
