The Salarias Goby, also known as the Lawnmower Blenny or Jewelled Rockskipper, is a peaceful and hardy species prized for its algae-eating capabilities. With its unique appearance featuring mottled brown, gray, and green hues, and small, jewel-like spots scattered across its body, the Salarias Goby adds both functionality and visual interest to reef aquariums. Its ability to continuously graze on algae makes it a valuable addition to help control nuisance algae growth in tanks.
The Salarias Goby can grow up to 5 inches and requires a well-established tank with plenty of live rock for grazing. This species is typically peaceful and does well with most other tank mates, although it may show territorial behavior towards other similar-looking gobies or blennies. It’s best suited for reef aquariums with a fine sandy substrate and ample rockwork where it can perch and hide when needed.
This goby feeds primarily on algae in the wild, using its comb-like teeth to scrape algae from rocks. In captivity, a diet of algae-based foods, supplemented with marine algae and vegetable matter, is essential for its health. In reef tanks, the Salarias Goby is generally considered reef-safe, as it does not harm corals or invertebrates.
