The Sebae Clownfish (Amphiprion sebae), also known as the African Clownfish, is a striking species distinguished by its dark body coloration with two white or cream-colored bands and a yellow to orange tail and fins. While it is often mistaken for the more common Clarkii Clownfish due to its similar appearance, the Sebae Clown has its own unique charm. Native to the Indian Ocean, this species is popular among aquarists for its beauty and adaptability.
Sebae Clownfish can grow up to 6 inches and require a tank of at least 30 gallons with plenty of live rock and, optionally, an anemone with which they may form a symbiotic relationship. While they do not require an anemone to thrive, they can pair well with species like the Sebae Anemone or the Carpet Anemone in captivity. This clownfish is semi-aggressive and may defend its territory, particularly towards other clownfish or similar-sized fish.
The Sebae Clown is reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates, making it a suitable addition to reef tanks. It is generally hardy and can adapt to various tank conditions. A balanced diet of frozen meaty foods, marine pellets, and algae-based foods will help maintain its health and vibrant coloration.
