The Purple Tang, also known as the Yellowtail Sailfin Tang, is a stunning and sought-after species prized for its vibrant deep purple body and bright yellow tail. Its bold coloration makes it a favorite among marine aquarium enthusiasts. Like other tangs, the Purple Tang has a sharp, scalpel-like spine at the base of its tail, which it uses for defense against predators, so caution should be exercised when handling or moving this fish.
The Purple Tang can grow up to 10 inches and requires a tank of at least 125 gallons to accommodate its active swimming behavior and territorial nature. It's a hardy species but can show aggression towards other tangs, especially those of similar shape and color. To reduce aggression, it is best to introduce it into a tank where it is the only tang or ensure the tank is large enough to house multiple tangs without overcrowding.
This tang is reef-safe and will not harm corals, making it an excellent addition to a reef tank. It feeds primarily on algae in the wild and should be provided with a diet rich in marine-based algae and vegetable matter, supplemented with frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp. Having plenty of live rock in the tank will allow the Purple Tang to graze on algae naturally and help maintain water quality.
