The Melanurus Wrasse, also known as the Hoeven’s Wrasse or Tail Spot Wrasse, is a beautiful and hardy fish known for its vibrant, multi-colored body with shades of green, blue, yellow, and orange, as well as distinctive dark stripes running horizontally along its body. This species is highly active and makes an excellent addition to reef aquariums, as it is peaceful and helps control pests like bristle worms and flatworms by naturally feeding on them.
Growing to about 5 inches in length, the Melanurus Wrasse requires a tank of at least 55 gallons with plenty of live rock and a sandy substrate, as it likes to bury itself in the sand to sleep or when feeling threatened. This species is generally peaceful, making it a great tank mate for most fish, though it may show mild aggression towards other wrasses, especially in smaller tanks.
The Melanurus Wrasse is considered reef-safe, though caution should be exercised as it may occasionally pick at small invertebrates like snails or shrimp. However, it will not bother corals, making it a great addition to reef tanks. This wrasse thrives on a varied diet that includes frozen meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets.
