The Matted Leatherjacket, also known as the Filefish, is a unique and interesting species with a distinct textured appearance resembling coarse leather. Its body is typically mottled brown, tan, or green, allowing it to blend into the reef environment. This camouflage helps the Matted Leatherjacket avoid predators. These fish are often recognized by their small, upturned mouths and a prominent spine on their dorsal fin, which they can erect when threatened.
The Matted Leatherjacket is known for being peaceful but may nibble on certain types of soft corals and invertebrates, making it reef-safe with caution. They typically grow up to 8 inches and require a tank with plenty of hiding places among rocks and coral, as well as open swimming space. A well-established aquarium with live rock is ideal for these fish to graze on algae and small organisms.
In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet that includes frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, along with marine algae. These fish are relatively hardy, but they do require good water quality and should be housed with non-aggressive tank mates.
