The Koran Angelfish (Pomacanthus semicirculatus), also known as the Semi-Circle Angelfish, is a stunning marine species that undergoes a dramatic transformation in coloration as it matures. Juveniles are deep blue with vibrant white or light blue semi-circular stripes, resembling the pattern of a Koran script, which gives the fish its common name. As the fish matures, its coloration changes to a more muted blue-green with yellow accents, and the stripes gradually disappear.
The Koran Angelfish can grow up to 15 inches in length, requiring a large tank of at least 180 gallons with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. This species is semi-aggressive and may become territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when housed with other angelfish. It is important to provide plenty of swimming space and hiding areas to reduce aggression.
While the Koran Angelfish can be housed in a reef tank, it is considered reef-safe with caution, as it may nip at soft corals, stony corals, and invertebrates like clams. It's better suited for fish-only aquariums or carefully monitored reef environments. In captivity, the Koran Angelfish requires a varied diet of marine-based algae, sponges, and meaty foods like mysis shrimp and brine shrimp to maintain its health and coloration.
