The Blue and Yellow Grouper, also known as the Lyretail Grouper or Variola louti, is a visually stunning species known for its vibrant coloration. Juveniles typically display a yellowish body with blue spots, which transform into a more dominant blue coloration with age, while the tail remains a striking yellow or red with beautiful lyre-shaped fins. This species is a popular choice for large marine aquariums due to its bold appearance and hardy nature.
Growing up to 24 inches, the Blue and Yellow Grouper requires a very large tank—at least 300 gallons—with ample swimming space and plenty of rock structures for hiding. It is a territorial and semi-aggressive species, best suited for tanks with larger, equally aggressive tank mates. Smaller fish and invertebrates are at risk of being eaten by this grouper, as it has a natural predatory instinct.
The Blue and Yellow Grouper is not reef-safe, as it may prey on smaller fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. It thrives on a carnivorous diet of meaty foods, such as silversides, squid, shrimp, and other marine-based proteins. Regular feedings of high-quality frozen or live foods will keep it healthy and maintain its vibrant coloration.
