The Black and White Heniochus, also known as the Black and White Bannerfish or Heniochus Butterflyfish, is a stunning and graceful species distinguished by its elongated dorsal fin and striking black and white coloration, with yellow accents on the fins. Its unique appearance often causes it to be mistaken for a Moorish Idol, though the Heniochusis generally hardier and easier to care for.
This species is peaceful and can be kept in reef aquariums, but caution is advised as it may occasionally nip at coral polyps or small invertebrates, making it reef-safe with caution. The Black and White Heniochus can grow up to 8 inches in size and requires a spacious tank, at least 125 gallons, with plenty of swimming room. It does best in well-structured environments with live rock for hiding and grazing.
In the wild, this species is found in shallow waters near coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region, often schooling with others of its kind. In captivity, they do well in pairs or small groups, and they are typically peaceful with other species. A varied diet of frozen meaty foods, marine algae, and high-quality flake or pellet foods will keep them healthy and thriving.
