The Two Stripe Damsel (Dascyllus reticulatus), also known as the Humbug Damsel or Reticulated Damsel, is a hardy and striking fish with a bold black-and-white striped pattern. Its compact size and eye-catching appearance make it a popular choice for marine aquariums, particularly for those seeking to add a splash of contrast. However, like many damsels, it is known for its territorial and aggressive nature, especially as it matures.
The Two Stripe Damsel grows up to 3 inches and is easy to care for, making it suitable for beginner aquarists. It thrives in a tank of at least 30 gallons, with plenty of live rock for hiding and establishing territories. Despite its small size, this fish can show aggression towards other tank mates, particularly smaller or more peaceful species, so it is best housed with similarly hardy or semi-aggressive fish.
This species is reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates, making it an excellent addition to reef tanks. It is a robust feeder, thriving on a varied diet of marine flakes, pellets, and frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp.
