The Tomini Tang, also known as the Tomini Bristletooth Tang or Tomini Surgeonfish, is a smaller, yet stunning species of tang, known for its sleek brown-gray body accented with bright yellow and white markings on its fins and tail. This species is highly sought after for both its manageable size and its active algae-grazing behavior, making it a valuable addition to reef aquariums.
Growing up to about 6 inches, the Tomini Tang is one of the smaller tang species and can thrive in a tank as small as 70 gallons, though more space is always appreciated. Like other tangs, it has a sharp spine near its tail used for defense, so caution should be taken when handling. The Tomini Tang is peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other fish species, though it may become territorial with other tangs, particularly those of similar shape and size.
This species is considered reef-safe and will not harm corals, making it a great choice for reef aquariums. The Tomini Tang feeds primarily on algae, so providing plenty of live rock for natural grazing, as well as offering a diet rich in marine algae, spirulina, and vegetable matter, is essential. Supplementing with occasional frozen meaty foods like mysis shrimp will help maintain its health and vibrant coloration.
