The Spot-Cheeked Surgeonfish, also known as the Blue Eye Tang or Ctenochaetus cyanocheilus, is a stunning species known for its striking blue eyes and subtle spot patterns near its cheeks. Its overall coloration is a mix of muted brown or gray with lighter markings, making its vivid blue eyes stand out even more. This tang is a valuable addition to any reef aquarium due to its peaceful nature and algae-grazing habits, which help keep the tank clean.
Growing up to 8 inches, the Spot-Cheeked Surgeonfish requires a spacious tank, ideally 125 gallons or more, to accommodate its active swimming behavior and provide plenty of live rock for grazing. Like other tangs, it has a sharp scalpel-like spine at the base of its tail, which it uses for defense, so caution should be used when handling it.
The Spot-Cheeked Surgeonfish is generally peaceful and gets along well with most other tank mates. However, it may become territorial towards other tangs or fish of similar shape, so it's best to avoid housing them together in smaller tanks. This fish is reef-safe and will not harm corals, making it a great addition to reef setups.
In the wild, this species feeds primarily on algae, and in captivity, it should be offered a varied diet that includes marine-based algae, spirulina, and frozen meaty foods like mysis shrimp. A healthy balance of greens will help maintain its immune system and bright coloration.
