The Ornatissimus Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ornatissimus), also known as the Ornate Butterflyfish or Clown Butterflyfish, is an exquisitely patterned species that is highly prized for its intricate and beautiful coloration. Its body is adorned with diagonal orange and white stripes, along with bold black markings around the eyes and a striking yellow tail. This combination of patterns makes the Ornate Butterflyfish one of the most visually stunning species in the butterflyfish family.
The Ornatissimus Butterflyfish typically grows up to 6 inches and requires a tank of at least 75 gallons. It thrives in well-established aquariums with ample live rock for grazing and hiding spaces. Although peaceful, it can be territorial toward other butterflyfish, so it is best to house this species with non-aggressive tank mates in a community setup.
This species is reef-safe with caution, as it may nip at soft corals, stony corals, and small invertebrates, particularly polyps and anemones. Because of this, it's better suited for fish-only aquariums or carefully monitored reef tanks. In captivity, the Ornatissimus Butterflyfish requires a varied diet of frozen meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, along with algae-based foods to keep it healthy and vibrant.
