The Maroon Clownfish, also known as the Spinecheek Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus), is one of the largest and most striking species of clownfish. It is known for its deep red to maroon coloration, accented by white or golden stripes across its body. These fish are highly territorial and more aggressive compared to other clownfish species, especially as they mature, so caution should be taken when selecting tank mates. Despite their aggression, they are a favorite among marine aquarists due to their beauty and hardy nature.
Maroon Clownfish can grow up to 6 inches, with females being significantly larger than males. They thrive in tanks of at least 30 gallons with plenty of rockwork and anemones, though they do not require an anemone to survive in captivity. When housed with an anemone, they may form a symbiotic relationship, which provides them with protection and enhances their natural behaviors.
The Maroon Clownfish is reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates, making it an excellent addition to reef tanks. However, due to their territorial nature, they should be housed either alone or with fish that can tolerate their assertiveness. Their diet should include a mix of frozen meaty foods, marine pellets, and algae-based foods to maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
