The Domino Damsel is a striking fish named for its jet-black body adorned with one or more white spots, resembling a domino. This hardy species is popular in the aquarium trade due to its resilience and bold appearance. However, while the Domino Damsel is visually appealing, it is also known for its territorial and aggressive nature, particularly as it matures, making it best suited for tanks with other semi-aggressive or similarly sized species.
Growing up to 5 inches, the Domino Damsel requires a tank of at least 30 gallons, though a larger tank is recommended if it will be housed with other fish to reduce aggression. They are highly adaptable and can thrive in a variety of conditions, making them ideal for beginners, but their territorial behavior must be considered when planning tank mates. They do well in reef environments but should not be housed with small, peaceful fish or delicate species.
The Domino Damsel feeds on a varied diet in the wild, including plankton and algae. In captivity, they will accept a wide range of foods, including marine pellets, flake foods, frozen mysis shrimp, and other meaty fare. With proper care, they are relatively easy to maintain and can live for many years in an aquarium.
