The Blue Unicorn Tang, also known as the Blue Naso Tang or Unicornfish (scientific name: Naso unicornis), is a large, elegant species known for the distinctive horn-like projection that develops on its forehead as it matures. Its sleek blue-gray body and elongated shape make it a striking addition to large marine aquariums. This tang can grow up to 24 inches in the wild, and while it typically stays smaller in captivity, it still requires a very large tank—at least 250 gallons or more—to accommodate its active swimming behavior and size.
The Blue Unicorn Tang is peaceful by nature and gets along well with other fish, although it may become territorial toward other tangs or similarly shaped species. Like other tangs, it has a sharp, scalpel-like spine at the base of its tail, which it uses for defense, so handling should be done carefully.
This tang is reef-safe and will not harm corals, making it an ideal choice for reef aquariums. Its diet primarily consists of algae, so providing ample live rock for grazing, as well as supplementing its diet with marine algae, spirulina, and vegetable matter, is essential. Occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp will help maintain its health and vibrant coloration.
