The Auriga Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga), also known as the Threadfin Butterflyfish, is a graceful and hardy species that is widely admired for its attractive coloration and distinctive appearance. It features a white body with fine diagonal lines and a dark band running through its eye. The dorsal fin is marked by an elongated thread-like extension, which gives the fish its common name. Yellow accents on the dorsal fin, tail, and rear body enhance its striking look.
The Auriga Butterflyfish can grow up to 9 inches in length and requires a tank of at least 125 gallons to accommodate its size and active swimming behavior. It thrives in a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. While this species is generally peaceful, it may become territorial towards other butterflyfish or similarly shaped species, particularly if the tank is too small.
The Auriga Butterflyfish is reef-safe with caution as it may nip at soft corals, stony corals, and invertebrates. It is more suitable for fish-only aquariums or carefully monitored reef setups. To maintain its health, provide a varied diet that includes frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, as well as some algae-based foods.
